One for the Road

One for the Road is a brief group programme (20 hours over 6 weeks) for repeat drink drivers- designed to help people make changes to avoid further drinking and driving. We have now run over 85 of these groups to date over 5 years.

People may be referred by lawyers, the court, probation services, alcohol and drug services, by family members or by themselves. A maximum of 12 referrals are accepted for each group. A referral can be made by completing the referral form on this page, by phoning 09 6363449 or by sending your details to .

The program can be completed within 6 weeks from referral and and there are 3 parts:

  1. A Pre-Group Interview (1 hour)
  2. Group Day One: a 6 hour session (typically a Friday 10:15am to 4:30pm) &  Group Day Two: a 4 hour session  (typically a Sunday 3 to 7pm)
  3. The ‘On the Road Again’ maintenance/support group (for 2 hours per week over 5 weeks) run at 5 locations across Auckland (see On the Road Again page).

After completing you will receive a certificate which you may present in court or to your referrer.

One for the Road has shown good outcomes to date with only 3.5% of graduates (1 in 28 people) ending up with a subsequent drink driving conviction over a period of 6 to 30 months following group completion. Participant feedback has been positive, “I think the course was a real eye opener. I enjoyed talking with people in similar situations to myself. I felt his course has helped me and would recommend it to others. I felt safe to be honest” …”There was an initial kick start for change in group, then acknowledging the problem, asking the hard questions, confronting the problem, and making a plan to avoid drinking and driving”

The group is run fortnightly at 4 different venues across the Auckland region and the table below shows the venue locations, addresses for these, and typical group times.
